Preparation time: 20 minutes

Cooking time: 15 minutes

Total time: 35 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients:

For the mushroom patties:

- 8 ounces (225g) mushrooms (such as cremini or portobello)

- 1 small onion, finely chopped

- 2 garlic cloves, minced

- 1 tablespoon olive oil

- 1/2 cup bread crumbs

- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce (optional)

- Salt and pepper to taste

For the burger assembly:

- 4 hamburger buns

- Lettuce leaves

- Sliced tomatoes

- Sliced red onions

- Condiments of your choice (mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, etc.)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the mushroom patties:

- Clean the mushrooms and remove any tough stems. Finely chop the mushrooms or pulse them in a food processor until they resemble a crumb-like texture.

- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until softened and fragrant, about 3-4 minutes.

- Add the chopped mushrooms to the skillet and cook until they release their moisture and start to brown, about 6-8 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

- Remove the skillet from heat and let the mushroom mixture cool slightly.

- Transfer the cooled mushroom mixture to a mixing bowl. Add the bread crumbs, grated Parmesan cheese (if using), Worcestershire sauce (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.

- Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into patties, about 1/2-inch thick. If the mixture is too moist, add a little more bread crumbs to help bind it.

- Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to firm up.

2. Cook the mushroom patties:

- Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Lightly grease the pan with oil or cooking spray.

- Cook the mushroom patties for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until nicely browned and heated through. Ensure the patties are cooked all the way to the center.

- Remove the patties from the heat and let them rest for a few minutes.

3. Assemble the burger:

- Slice the hamburger buns in half and lightly toast them if desired.

- Place a lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun. Add a mushroom pattie on top of the lettuce.

- Top the patties with sliced tomatoes and red onions.

- Add your desired condiments such as mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, or any other toppings of your choice.

- Cover the burger with the top half of the bun.

4. Serve and enjoy:

- Serve the mushroom-based "meat" pattie hamburgers immediately while still warm.

- Accompany with a side of fries, coleslaw, or a fresh salad.

- Enjoy the delicious and satisfying flavors of this mushroom-based alternative!

Note: Feel free to customize your mushroom-based hamburgers with additional toppings and seasonings according to your taste preferences. Experiment with different types of mushrooms for unique flavors and textures.
